Exhibition Opening (Posted February 28, 2005) Caren Canier, FAAR '78, has a one person exhibition of recent paintings at Concordia University Kreft Gallery in Ann Arbor MI this month (February).
Musical Notes (Posted February 26, 2005) Pierre Jalbert, FAAR '01, has released two CDs containing the music of Pierre Jalbert: Pierre Jalbert - Chamber Music, Gasparo Records, www.gasparo.com and Makoto Nakura - Triple Jump - 6 New Pieces for Marimba, Helicon Records, www.heliconrecords.com. Pierre's current projects include works for the Houston Symphony (which they hope to take to Carnegie Hall next January) and the Brooklyn Friends of Chamber Music. He has also been commissioned through Meet the Composer's Magnum Opus Project for an orchestral work which will be premiered by three California orchestras over the next three seasons.
Musical Composition (Posted February 24, 2005) A musical composition for quintet, Ghosts in the Dream Machine, is being composed by the award-winning young composer, Gabriela Lena Frank, based on drawings and paintings of Simon Dinnerstein FAAR '78. It will be premiered at the Trinity Center for Urban Life, Philadelphia, on April 10, 2005. Performers will include the gifted pianist Simone Dinnerstein, daughter of the artist, and the Chiara String Quartet (currently in residence at the Juilliard School and recent performers at the Fellows' Annual Concert in the Villa Aurelia.)The work will be published by Schirmer's with reproductions of the artist's work to accompany the score. In performance, the music will merge with the visual art projected on stage. A second performance is scheduled for April 12, 2005 at the Aaron Copeland School of Music, Queens College. In addition, a painting of Dinnerstein's will be on display in the 180th Annual National Academy of Design, New York Exhibition of its members, May 25 - July 3, 2005. Prize Winner (Posted February 24, 2005) Ronald G. Musto, FAAR '79, is the winner of the 2004 Marraro Prize of the American Historical Association for his book, Apocalypse in Rome. Cola di Rienzo and the Politics of the New Age (University of California Press, 2003). This new biography situates the meteoric rise and fall of Cola di Rienzo as visionary restorer of the Roman Republic from 1347 to 1354 within the religious, cultural, and political currents of early Renaissance Italy, revealing how his aspirations to create a reformed civil society also met apocalyptic expectations for a new age of justice, peace, and enlightenment. Established in 1973, the AHA's Helen and Howard R. Marraro Prize is offered annually for the best work (book or article) in any epoch of Italian history, Italian cultural history, or Italian-American relations. New Chair (Posted January 12, 2005) Gerald Silk, FAAR '82, has been named Chair of the Art History Department at Tyler School of Art/Temple University. His essay— "'Il Primo Pilota’: Mussolini, Fascist Aeronautical Symbolism, and Imperial Rome"—has been published in "Donatello Among the Blackshirts: History and Modernity in the Visual Culture of Fascist Italy," ed. Roger Crum and Claudia Lazzaro" (Cornell University Press, 2005). He is the keynote speaker at a Christo Film Festival (2005) in Jackson Hole, sponsored by the Wyoming Council on the Arts. Exhibition Opening (Posted January 12, 2005) Franc Palaia, FAAR '85, exhibited at Montclair University, will be included in the Kingston Sculpture Biennial '05, received a grant from the Dutchess County Arts Council in NY, and was commissioned to paint an outdoor mural for the Empire State Games, New York State, summer 2005. Installation Completed (Posted January 12, 2005) Stanley Tigerman, RAAR '80, Co-curator of the latest installation at The Art Institute of Chicago entitled "Ten Visions" has recently completed a project with the Central Area Committee of Chicago as Editor of "Visionary Chicago Architecture" and remains busier-than-ever working on his current favorite projects: the Holocaust Museum and Education Center in Skokie, Illinois; the National Training Center for the International Masonry Institute in Bowie, Maryland and a new facility/shelter for the homeless in Chicago, Illinois for the Pacific Garden Mission. Publication (Posted December 21, 2004) Anna Marguerite McCann, FAAR ’66, and John Peter Oleson announce the availability of "Deep-Water Shipwrecks off Skerki Bank: the 1997 Survey" (Journal of Roman Archaeology, Suppl. Ser. No. 58, a separate volume in this series). The book tells the story of the discovery of 8 shipwrecks in the deep sea off Skerki Bank with Robert Ballard, about 75 miles northwest of Sicily. This is the first archaeological exploration of the deep ocean with robots and a nuclear submarine. Art Installation Purchased (Posted September 14, 2004) Maureen Selwood, FAAR' 03, reports that her installation, As The Veil Lifts, which was presented at the Rome May Studio Exhibit in 2003, was purchased by the Fonds Regional D'art Contemporain de Picardie in France this past spring. Professor Harvey was awarded the Pinanski Prize for Excellence in Teaching at the 2004 Wellesley College Commencement, and was also named the second Elizabeth Christy Kopf Professor of Art. Poems Published (Posted September 02, 2004) John Peck, FAAR '79, has published his Collected Shorter Poems, 1966-1996 (Northwestern University Press, April 2004). The cover features a painting by Robert Hooper, Fellow in painting AAR ‘79 (Ukiyo-e Wunderkammer, 1995). Also in June he was awarded the first annual Thomas McGrath Prize by SAMIZDAT, ed. It was partly written when she was a Resident at the Academy in Spring 2001. Books Published (Posted August 17, 2004) Marc Treib, FL ‘85, has announced the publication of his book: Noguchi in Paris: The Unesco Garden, published this past spring. His Thomas Church, Landscape Architect: Making the Modern California Landscape, will be out this fall. Both are published by William Stout of San Francisco. Routledge will publish a selection of his essays spring 2005 under the title: Settings and Stray Paths: Writings on Landscapes and Gardens. Books Published (Posted August 17, 2004) David Marsh, FR '83, published three books in the past year: an edition and translation of Petrarch's "Invectives" (Harvard, 2003), the volume "Renaissance Fables: Aesopic Prose by Leon Battista Alberti, Bartolomeo Scala, Leonardo da Vinci, and Bernardino Baldi" (MRTS, 2004), and a translation of Paolo Zellini's "Brief History of Infinity" (Penguin, 2004).
Finalist in Design Competition (Posted August 08, 2004) Frederic Schwartz, FAAR '85, just back from China is in the finals (teamed with Robert A. M. Stern Architects and the Southeast University of China) for an international competition, to design the Master Plan for the next World Fair 2010, in the heart of Shanghai on the Huangpu River. Schwartz was founder of the THINK team, whose Master Plan for the World Trade Center site received worldwide popular support and coverage. THINK Baghdad [teaming again with Rafael Vinoly Architects] was recently selected for the International Trade Zone Master Plan in Baghdad. In June, Schwartz Architects completed Knoll's new 60,000 sf headquarters and showroom in New York. Knoll shares the same address with advertising giant Deutsch NY Inc., where Donald Trump remarked about the 150,000 sf Schwartz design: "This is great space!" in the first episode of "The Apprentice." This spring at NEOCON, Deutsch's LA Inc. offices were named one of the "Ten Best Interiors of the Decade." Ongoing projects include: The Santa Fe Rail yard Park, winner of a national design competition in collaboration with landscape architect Ken Smith and artist Mary Miss; The Kahlhari, winner of an NYC/HPD architect/developer competition for 500,000 sf of green and affordable housing in Harlem; and the new, 250,000 sf, $135 million, Staten Island Ferry Terminal located at the tip of Manhattan. PhD Completed (Posted August 08, 2004) Lila Yawn, FAAR '98, completed her PhD at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill under the direction of Jaroslav Folda and graduated in May of this year. The title of her thesis: The Giant Bible of Perugia (Biblioteca Augusta, Ms. L. 59). A Manuscript and Its Creators in Eleventh-Century Central Italy. She continues to live in Rome, teaching, consulting, researching, and writing. New CD Released (Posted August 08, 2004) Dennis Eberhard, FAAR '79, has released a new CD. In July 2004 Naxos released internationally the premiere recording of Eberhard's "Shadow of the Swan," concerto for piano and orchestra on its American Music Series. The CD features Russian-born pianist Halida Dinova and the St. Petersburg Cappella Symphony Orchestra under Alexander Tchernoushenko. The concerto is coupled with Eberhard's "Prometheus Wept" for basso and strings. Eberhard and Creative Filmmakers Association in partnership with LEAP (Linking Employment Abilities Potential) have co-produced a video that chronicles Eberhard's trip to Russia to premiere and record his piano concerto. The documentary, also entitled "Shadow of the Swan," not only features Eberhard's music, but also deals with disability issues. The documentary is projected to be premiered on the Cleveland International Film Festival in March 2005. Eberhard has also completed "Faces," a concerto to viola and orchestra written with the support of the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation. Boutique Hotel Opened (Posted August 02, 2004) Pablo Ojeda-O´Neill, FAAR '96, has restored an important baroque palace in the city of Écija , Seville. It now functions as boutique hotel and cultural center. Architect Ojeda-O´Neill invites the American Academy in Rome and its Fellows to experience the cultural diversity of Andalucia from his hotel. Grants Awarded (Posted July 13, 2004) Franc Palaia, FAAR '86, received three grants for his curated show, The Luminous Image, which was presented at the Collaborative Concepts Gallery in Beacon, NY. The grants were awarded from the Dutchess County Arts Council, Walmart, and the Experimental TV Center. He has also exhibited his work at the Donskoj Gallery in Kingston, NY, among other venues. Fellowships Awarded (Posted July 13, 2004) Eve D'Ambra, FAAR '86, was awarded fellowships from the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation and the National Endowment of the Humanities in 2003-04 for research on beauty and the Roman portrait.
